Edges: An Artist Book
Edges began as a deeply personal project, evolving into a bold, conceptual exploration of isolation, framed through the lens of biophysics. This artist’s book fuses expressive typography and dynamic illustrations to communicate the stark themes of separation, fragmentation, and loneliness. With every page, Edges reveals the raw beauty of solitude, using design as both a vehicle and a voice. Manipulated, dissected, and spatially extended, the poem transforms into an experimental, visually-charged narrative that challenges traditional storytelling.
The illustrations, simple yet evocative, nod to the innocence of children's books but grow into something far more mature, blending seamlessly with the text to deepen the immersive experience. Each page turns into a new layer, pulling the reader further into the emotional and intellectual tension of the work.
The Challenge
As a personal project, Edges allowed for total creative freedom, but it also presented its own unique set of challenges. My goal was to create a harmonious balance where text and image stood as equals. I wanted to approach the book as a single continuous sequence—a microscopic zoom-in effect that unfolded page by page, drawing readers deeper into the essence of the poem. I aimed to achieve this through bold, minimalist design elements that still felt deeply intricate and deliberate.
The Solution
I opted for a limited color palette and simple vector forms, blending the charm of children’s book design with contemporary, bold shapes. This allowed me to maintain a playful energy while elevating the content to a mature, thought-provoking space. The result is a book that is as much about the visual language as it is about the written word—a fusion of form and meaning that resonates long after the pages are closed.
Essential Skills
From concept to prepress, I developed every aspect of Edges: the poetry, the illustrations, and the design. This project taught me how to work within the constraints of a small scale and budget while still delivering a powerful, high-impact outcome. I combined my design expertise with my marketing skills, and this blend of my expertise culminated in Edges being showcased at the Boston Book Art Fair, a moment of validation for a personal vision realized.
Edges is not just a book—it's an experience, a journey into the heart of isolation, crafted with intention, boldness, and an unwavering commitment to design.
